Fearless Unconditional Love

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” (1 John 4:8)

“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

God’s love is unconditional. What an amazing thought. It’s not a new concept at all, but many people have not encountered what that really means for them. God’s unconditional love means freedom. We are completely free from the letter of the law and the fear that it creates. How can this be?

Let’s ask ourselves some worst-case scenario questions. Who are you afraid of becoming? What is the worst version of yourself you see in your mind? What areas do you struggle in that you feel need to be monitored with an iron rod? What if all of your weaknesses spilled out into your life now? What if you were the worst person you could imagine yourself becoming? Let that thought wash over you for a moment. Imagine all of your temptations ruling in your life: anger, pornography, promiscuity, drug addictions, selfishness, pride. Put that all in a package, imagine this “you” standing before the King. What do you think His reaction would be?

Know this; He loves you all the same. Standing before God as the worst person you could be, He would run to you and throw His robe over you and wrap you up in his arms. He’d kiss your neck and wet your shoulder with His tears. His love would intensely flow over you as thick as oil. You know what? This is no longer a scenario, this is truly how He feels about you right at this moment. What a relief! What freedom we feel in this revelation! There really is nothing that can separate us from His love. There was never a moment when His love was different for us than it is now. It has always been painfully intense and will always be so. Whatever title you place on yourself, whatever sin is stamped on your heart, God loves you with the same intense love.

This is how we break out from underneath the weight of the law. God’s love is not about anything that we do, rather it has everything with who we are. That’s how He loves us. Once we come to understand the fullness of God’s love, everything else grows dim. We no longer need to live under the law, because we simply will not need to. The law creates fear, but His love has completely undone our fear. God’s love fills our holes and trumps our fear. And knowing that His love measures the same whether we are the worst or the best person we could become makes us the freest people the world will ever know. Let’s live in that freedom!
