The Heart of Social Justice

“O Lord, You hear the desire of the afflicted; You will strengthen their heart; You will incline your ear to do JUSTICE to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.” - Psalm 10:17-18

I read this verse this morning and it was just so inspiring! We have become enthralled in Extreme to not only carry the message of Christ to those on the outskirts of salvation, but to change the world in the process. The mission work that we do in Extreme is not about sharing an ideal from 2000 years ago; it isn’t the commonly imagined scenario of sending someone deep into the jungle to a native community in order to communicate the message of Christ into a language the Bible has never been translated into. What we do in Extreme stems from the value that the change Christ does to someone’s heart can truly change the world.

In reading that verse again it strikes me how amazing it is that we have a Heavenly Father Who is our advocate! He is watching out for us. He is truly the Shepherd and He is watching over his sheep. This psalm bursts with the essence of protection that a shepherd would bestow on his sheep. It also mentions something a bit shocking at the end, that it’s man that strikes terror on earth. Observing the world, it is easy to see how injustice, in most cases, is the result of man’s exploitation, greed, lust, etc. And injustice is something that will continue on for generations to come if we don’t take a serious stand against it. That should seem obvious to us considering it’s mentioned in the Bible, in a verse written over 2,000 years ago!

There are too many ways to count that we can stand against injustice, and we have chosen one. Our desire is to go to the root of the problem, the heart. If we can change the hearts of human-traffickers, we can end human-trafficking. If we can change the hearts of abusive spouses, we can rebuild broken homes. If we can change the hearts of corporate leaders in the fashion industry, we could end dangerous work environments for those making our clothing in foreign countries. We can change the world by changing hearts! But, honestly, WE can’t change anyone’s hearts. That’s God job, but He is asking us to join Him in this task.
