When I was seven years old, I waltzed into the kitchen one day and said, "Mommy, I think God wants me to be a missionary--but I don't want to talk about it!" I didn't want to talk about it because the thought terrified me, so I put it on the back burner for seven more years. Then on Thursday, July 12, 2007, at NYC St. Louis, everything changed. General Superintendent Dr. Warrick was speaking and he talked about how Moses had excuses and reasons why he couldn't go back to Egypt. It sounded a lot like me with my call to missions. Then he talked about how one-by-one God had taken care of every one of Moses' doubts and anything that would've hindered him. Once again, I realized that God had done the same thing for me--and I couldn't run anymore. Kneeling at a chair by the crowded altars, the only thing I could think to pray was, "Send me! I will go!" It was the best day of my life!
Much has happened in the 10 years since then. In 2015 I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan with a degree in TESOL education (teaching English to speakers of other languages) and a world languages minor. Most recently, I went to Ecuador for 40 days with Extreme and have taught English to Spanish-speaking children in a couple of elementary schools. Since getting back from Ecuador, God has continued to cultivate His call in my heart and open doors to the mission field. I found myself applying to be a 40/40, fully expecting to end up in a Spanish-speaking country. If there's anything I've learned in the past couple years though, it's that every time I think I have a plan for my life, God likes to do something completely different. But I've learned that His plans are always better and nothing is wasted in His hands. So it is with great excitement that I trade in my Spanish for Portuguese and my salsa for samba (just kidding--I can't dance!) as we head to Anápolis in a few short months for Extreme's first church plant in Brazil. To God be the glory!
